Hello out there! My name is Becky and I am one of several interns with the National Geographic Education division this spring semester. Recently I graduated from Wayne State College (in Nebraska, not Michigan) with majors in Geography and Public Accounting.
Some of my favorite past experiences relate to travelling and sightseeing because I am a total travel buff. I have spent a week in Central Mexico on a mission trip where I interacted with many Mexican children playing games and putting on puppet shows. I also went with a college travel organization called the Explorer’s Club to St. Louis, Estes Park, Colorado, and Duluth, Minnesota; and I worked for three wonderful summers for the Fish and Wildlife Service one summer in Nebraska and two summers in North Dakota. The best part was that during each of these experiences, and the numerous others that are too many to mention, I met new people, experienced new cultures and landscapes, and learned about myself as well. Some of my research interests include Israel, human geography, and transportation issues. I recently completed an honors projected referencing structurally deficient bridges in the Central United States.
I am excited to work for the National Geographic because this organization stands for something that I believe is important for each and every person inhabiting the Earth–place. I am sure the average person does not often think about how important place is to business, technology, society, and even one’s own identity. National Geographic is trying to impact how people think about themselves, other people, nature, and the planet where we live. It is an impossible sounding task in some ways, but I absolutely cannot wait to play my small role in spreading the word by being an intern here at National Geographic. In the next three months I hope to learn more about the National Geographic and its widespread endeavors, make some new friends, and have a ton of fun!

Hey Kristen! I heard about the geography intern with National Geographic through my advisor. He strongly suggested that I apply and so I did. There is a simple online application and also a paper packet that they want you to send them that includes like a cover letter, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. I have to admit when I applied I thought my advisor was crazy, because honestly who does not want to work for National Geographic? I knew it would be extremely competitive and being from a small state college I was not sure I stood much of a chance, but here I am! I strongly encourage you to contact your internship or career services office and apply!
Hi Becky, I just stumbled across this while looking for something online for a Geography project, and as I was reading this I thought, “Man! I would love to be an intern there!” So I was wondering how you got the internship? I’m sure that’s not a super simple question, but as a Geography major, I’m trying to look ahead and see what options are out there for me and how I can get to them!

Thanks! I look forward to the months ahead.
