The 2018 National Geographic GeoBee Champion, Venkat Ranjan (a.k.a. Venky), recently experienced a “life-changing” week aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II in the Galápagos Islands.
In addition to a college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, Ranjan won an all-expenses-paid expedition when he took top honors at the 30th annual National Geographic GeoBee last May. The trip was provided by Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic.
“This trip can change your perspective on a lot of things, especially conservation,” said Ranjan. “Because some of the species here are extinct, or have nearly reached extinction, and we as humans have caused a lot of damage.”
While on board, Ranjan facilitated a Galápagos-themed GeoBee game for guests, and even shared some exclusive tips on how to win the National Geographic GeoBee. Check out what he had to say about his experience in this video:
The National Geographic GeoBee is an annual academic competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight (4-8) from nearly 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee for a chance to win college scholarships, the glory of being the National Geographic GeoBee Champion, and an all-expenses paid grand prize voyage to the Galapagos Islands with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic. You’re right. Currently, the National Geographic GeoBee is a competition for public schools, private schools, and homeschools in the United States and its territories, as well as the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS).
