- It’s been more than 150 years since the Underground Railroad was active. Many buildings have been torn down.
- Stations on the Underground Railroad were everyday buildings: family homes, churches, businesses. Even when being used to hide fugitive slaves, the buildings offered few clues that alerted either critics or supporters to their purpose.
- The Underground Railroad was a secret network to begin with. Most conductors and pilots were unknown even when they were active, and left few written records.

- Why would positive identification of the Pocahontas Island house as a station on the Underground Railroad be an important discovery?
- It would be the only verified Underground Railroad station in the “South”—slaveholding states that supported the Confederacy during the Civil War. This information would help historians and citizens better understand a crucial part of personal, local, state, regional, and national identity.
- The local and regional tourism industry (hotels, restaurants, museums, retail shops) would benefit enormously from such a discovery. (For instance, the site could be a new stop on the National Park Service’s “Network to Freedom” Underground Railroad program.)
