The Grosvenor Teacher Fellow (GTF) program is a professional development opportunity made possible by a partnership between National Geographic Education and Lindblad Expeditions. This opportunity is designed to give current K-12 classroom teachers and informal educators from the 50 U.S. states, Canada, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico the opportunity to extend Grosvenor’s legacy of excellence in geographic education. Through the program, exemplary educators are recognized for their commitment to geographic education and are given the opportunity to be actively engaged in finding new ways to bring geographic awareness to their classrooms or informal learning environments through a field-based experience.

I applied for the program and am currently waiting to hear back. The site says applicants will be notified by phone in February. If I was chosen would I have already been notified? The 2015 Fellows have been selected and were notified of their selection. Unfortunately, due to the high number of applicants we are not able to provide feedback on individual applications.

Im sorry if i missed this in the information. There is no stipend for this program. Is that correct? One would just need to take a year off of their regular teaching position?
Hello Rosie, This is a not that type of commitment. It is a short-term travel opportunity that is not anticipated to interrupt your school year.
Do you provide child care coverage for our children and substitute teachers for our students?
If so, I have five exceptional teachers who would love to join you!
i am commenting on one of the best teachers I know. Her name is Ann Spear. She teaches 1st grade but has taught other grades as well. She has 25+ years experience and is excellent at making these subjects interesting and memorable to each of her students. She is a wonderful team player at this small private school in South Florida. She sacrifices a grander salary to continue to make an impression on these young lives in this small school. This opportunity would be unavailable to her except through a program like this.

I am a retired educator of 36 years. My main focus during my career was to make Social Studies, Geography, and Foreign Languages come alive through hands-on activities and to encourage my students to pursue their own dreams by sharing stories of my adventures around the world. I would love to have the opportunity to travel to Antarctica—my last continent—and return to share my experiences as a traveling teacher, presenting to students and fellow retirees who are not able to travel. I’ve always had wanderlust and it’s a privilege to pay it forward. The greatest gift that I’ve received from my former students is a sharing of their own adventures and thanking me for planting the seed long ago—to dream big!

I grew up traveling the world through your publications. Currently I teach 8th grade at Sutter Middle School in Folsom, CA. I’m a PE teacher who incorporates life experiences and relevant topics to make learning tangible. I’ve taught ancient civilizations and just returned from Greece with first hand experiences of viewing glimpses of the ancient world. I grew up in Brazil and share my language and culture (especially dance) with my students. I would love to expand my horizons and life experiences to share more with my students.

My name is Michelle Brown, I currently have a grade one assignment in an urban school in Toronto, Canada. I am very keen on qualifying for this amazing adventure where I would have the opportunity to learn about other lands and the stories of those lands. I teach using Indigenous Perspectives of reciprocal relations with the land we live on. I use many facets of environmental stewardship to guide my teaching practice. I work from the place of responsibility to the land, the earth and all it offers.

Hello GTF and Nat Geo,
My name is Adam DePiro and I am currently employed as a 7th/8th grade Social Studies teacher at Tyrone Area Middle School in lovely Tyrone, PA. I have spent the last 6 years traveling all over the map to places like Boston, Philadelphia, Kitty Hawk, and to many other places to name. I am currently in New Orleans after coming back from watching the Orion launch into space with my Uncle who has been working on the crew module for the last 10 years. Everywhere I go, I acquire primary resources so that my students can touch a piece of history and I think that this fellowship would offer me the chance to have a once in a life time experience that I can share with my students.
Also, I have 35 years worth of National Geographic magazines that I allow my students to use as resources for their projects. Also we play “Stump the Teacher” with a National Geographic board game that I won in a Geography Bee contest when I was in 8th grade. Sounds crazy I know, but you can’t make this stuff up.
I hope you will consider me for this fellowship and I looked forward to hearing from you.
