1. Blog-a-thon
We are going to have some really great entries this year that cover a wide variety of topics, such as the Sunderbans – the worlds largest mangrove forest, the 2010 Olympic Games, and the impact of mountain top coal mining on freshwater streams. I am so excited to read them! I can’t wait to hear what people have to say about geography. Hopefully, I’ll even learn some new things about the world!
2. Challenging Myself to Cut My Water Usage
After using the Water Footprint Calculator on the National Geographic Freshwater Portal, I realized that one easy thing I can do to minimize my water usage is make my showers shorter. So, I am looking forward to challenging myself to cut my showers down and make my water footprint smaller!
3. Hosting Freshwater Events for National Geographic Staff
We have some great ideas for games and activities to put on for the staff here at National Geographic, and I can’t wait to interact with co-workers, share some freshwater lessons, and hear what they have to say about one of the biggest issues the world faces today.
4. Watching a Movie from the Freshwater Film List
Watching movies is one of my favorite things to do – especially on rainy days. The movie I have picked out from the Freshwater Film List to watch is Thirst – a documentary that travels throughout the United States, Bolivia, and India to question whether water is a human right or a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded within the global marketplace. Which movie looks interesting to you?
5. Learning About the Freshwater Events YOU Will Host During GA Week!
I can’t wait to see all the events held across the country in celebration of Geography Awareness Week. So far, we have heard about some interesting and fun events such as freshwater contests, summits, festivals, and roundtable discussions. Contact your local geographic alliance to find an event near you, or host an event yourself!

That’s a good question! I’m not sure what the prospects are – I’m still learning a lot about freshwater myself! I think it’s definitely possible to use recycled water for a majority of the things we use water for. Our Geography Awareness Website has a ton of reading and educational resources about freshwater – maybe you can find more about using recycled water there!

I can really relate to your bid to cut back on water usage.Just what do you think are the prospects for using recycled for virtually everything except perhaps cooking?
